As we kick off our third annual Membership Campaign, I encourage you to reflect with me on the successes and trials of the National Institute of Flamenco over the past year.As many of you know, we began 2009 with a difficult announcement; the postponement of our flagship program, Festival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque.This was a difficult decision, but necessary to stabilize NIF during hard economic times. Thanks to everyone for their outpour of support during this time.We were able to garner national press through the New York Times and MSNBC about our Festival, and we also get the attention of the University of New Mexico through a student rally held in May.I am happy to announce that plans for Festival Flamenco 2010 are well underway!
Despite the postponement of Festival Flamenco, 2009 was a monumental year for the Institute. In April, the National Conservatory of Flamenco Arts celebrated its 10th year.What started out as a small following of students has blossomed into a thriving community, and we thank you all for helping us make flamenco a unique part of our community.In June, Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company presented its 20th season, celebrating the milestone with a three-night performance of their entire repertory.We are so proud of the successes of these programs, facilitated by the teachers, performers, and of course you, the many supporters who come week after week to classes and performances!
NIF is also proud to announce its newest partnership—Tierra Adentro: The New Mexico School of Academics, Art and Artesania!As partners in curricular development, NIF is excited to bring our expertise in arts education to charter school education.Tierra Adentro is slated to open fall of 2010, and will serve grades six through 12.
